Levodropropizine is a non-opioid cough suppressant used for dry, irritating, non-productive cough. It acts mainly on peripheral sensory pathways in the airways, reducing cough-receptor sensitivity rather than suppressing the brainstem cough center.
- Use: Short-term relief of dry cough. It is not intended to help clear mucus from a productive cough.
- Common adverse effects: Sleepiness, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and headache.
- Avoid or seek medical advice before use if: You have a cough with substantial phlegm, impaired mucus clearance, severe liver or kidney disease, pregnancy/breastfeeding, or are giving it to a child. Do not combine with alcohol or sedating drugs without advice.
- Important: A cough lasting over 3 weeks, or accompanied by breathlessness, wheeze, fever, chest pain, coughing blood, or unexplained weight loss needs medical assessment.
It is not available in every country, including the United States. A respiratory medicine reference describes it as a peripheral non-opioid antitussive with a favorable benefit-risk profile compared with dextromethorphan. Murray & Nadel's Textbook of Respiratory Medicine, p. 386.
