CDC skin abscess boils when to seek medical care incision drainage
This sounds consistent with a skin abscess/boil. Because it is hard, painful, and draining pus, please get examined at an urgent care clinic or by a doctor today or within 24 hours. A clinician may need to safely drain it. Do not try to lance, cut, or forcefully squeeze it yourself. For simple abscesses, drainage is often the main treatment, while antibiotics are used selectively after examination.
Until you are seen:
- Apply a warm, moist compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times daily.
- Gently wash with soap and water, then cover with a clean gauze dressing.
- Wash hands well after touching it. Do not share towels, razors, or clothing.
- Use paracetamol/acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain if you normally can take them safely.
- Avoid pressure, shaving, or friction over the area.
Go to an emergency department now if you have fever or chills, rapidly spreading redness/swelling, red streaks, severe worsening pain, black/purple skin, feel unwell, or if it is on the face near the eye, genitals, or near the spine. Seek prompt care as well if you have diabetes, weak immunity, are pregnant, or it keeps recurring.
