Is the cough worse in the day or at night?
    Does it increase during winter?
Does the cough change when lying down or sitting?
    What makes the cough worse?
    What relieves the cough?

For expectoration / sputum

Do you bring out phlegm with cough?
Since when have you been bringing out phlegm?

How much phlegm is there, little or a lot?
What is the color of the phlegm: white, yellow, green, or dark?
    Does the phlegm smell bad?
Do you see blood in the phlegm?
How often does blood come, and how much?
Is it fresh red, or dark like old blood?

For dyspnea / breathlessness

    Do you feel breathless?
    Since when has breathlessness started?
Does it occur on exertion, while walking, or even at rest?
Does breathlessness worsen on lying down?
For a patient, use “कफ” rather than the technical word “expectoration,” and “धाप लागणे/श्वास लागणे” for dyspnea.
