All dental sensation is carried by branches of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).

| Maxillary premolars | Middle superior alveolar nerve |
| Maxillary molars | Posterior superior alveolar nerve |
| Mandibular molars and usually 2nd premolar | Inferior alveolar nerve |
| Mandibular 1st premolar, canine, and incisors | Incisive branch of the inferior alveolar nerve |
- The maxillary superior alveolar nerves are branches of maxillary nerve (V2).
- The inferior alveolar nerve is a branch of mandibular nerve (V3).
- The mandibular central incisors can have crossing, bilateral innervation.
