Anaemia is diagnosed mainly by the haemoglobin (Hb) level in a blood test, measured in g/dL. It is not usually diagnosed by a “blood ratio.”
WHO cutoffs for anaemia:

| Adult men | 13 g/dL (130 g/L) |
| Adult non-pregnant women | 12 g/dL (120 g/L) |
| Pregnancy, 1st and 3rd trimester | 11 g/dL (110 g/L) |
| Pregnancy, 2nd trimester | 10.5 g/dL (105 g/L) |
| Children 5-11 years | 11.5 g/dL (115 g/L) |
| Children 6-23 months | 10.5 g/dL (105 g/L) |
For an adult non-pregnant woman, for example:
- Hb 12 or above: usually not anaemia
- Hb 11 to 11.9: mild anaemia
- Hb 8 to 10.9: moderate anaemia
- Hb below 8: severe anaemia
