Benzodiazepine overdose

Typical features
  • Drowsiness, slurred speech, poor coordination, confusion, reduced consciousness.
  • An isolated oral benzodiazepine overdose often causes sedation with relatively preserved breathing and vital signs. Danger rises sharply if combined with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives, when slow or stopped breathing and coma can occur.
What to do
  • If someone is difficult to wake, breathing slowly/irregularly, has blue lips, or has collapsed: call emergency services immediately. Place them on their side if breathing and do not leave them alone.
  • Hospital treatment is mainly airway, breathing, oxygenation, monitoring, and supportive care.
  • Flumazenil reverses benzodiazepine effects but is not routinely used. It can trigger severe withdrawal and seizures, especially with chronic benzodiazepine use, epilepsy, or mixed/unknown overdoses. Clinical guidance on flumazenil

Lasix (furosemide) adverse effects

Lasix is a loop diuretic that increases urine and salt loss.
Common or important adverse effects
  • Dehydration / low blood pressure: dizziness, fainting, thirst.
  • Electrolyte loss: especially low potassium, low sodium, low magnesium, and sometimes low calcium.
  • Metabolic alkalosis.
  • Kidney injury from excessive volume loss.
  • High uric acid, which can precipitate gout.
  • Hearing toxicity: tinnitus or hearing loss, particularly with high IV doses, rapid IV administration, renal impairment, or concurrent aminoglycoside antibiotics.
  • Nausea, rash, and rarely allergic-type reactions. Furosemide is a sulfonamide derivative.
Electrolyte effects can cause muscle cramps or weakness, palpitations, and dangerous arrhythmias, particularly if the person also takes digoxin. Textbook sources list hypokalemia, hyponatremia, acute kidney injury, and ototoxicity among key loop-diuretic adverse effects. Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, 16th Edition, p. 2970-2974.
Seek prompt medical care for fainting, confusion, very little urine, severe weakness, new palpitations, or ringing in the ears/hearing changes while taking Lasix.
