Gunite (also spelled "gunnite") is a construction material and application method. Here's a quick overview:
What it is:
Gunite is a dry-mix form of shotcrete - it's concrete or mortar pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. The dry ingredients (cement + sand) are mixed first, then water is added at the nozzle just before application.
How it differs from shotcrete:
Gunite = dry-mix process (water added at nozzle)
Wet-mix shotcrete = all ingredients pre-mixed, then sprayed
Common uses:
Swimming pools - the most common residential use; gunite pools are known for durability and design flexibility
Tunnels and mines - lining and stabilization
Retaining walls
Slope stabilization / erosion control
Repair of concrete structures
Water tanks and reservoirs
Advantages:
Very strong and durable
Conforms to any shape
Low rebound waste when applied correctly
Good for overhead and vertical surfaces
Disadvantages:
Requires a skilled nozzleman
Dust generation during application
Consistency depends heavily on operator technique
Is there a specific aspect of gunite you're interested in - pool construction, structural use, technique, or something else?
