Spot 1 - Posterior Leg Dissection (Labels B on calcaneal tendon)

Specimen: Posterior compartment of the leg / popliteal fossa dissection

Based on the microscopy images visible:
Slide 1 (pale/low contrast image):
  • Alternating dark (cellular) and pale bands of lymphoid tissue
  • Consistent with Lymph node (cortex with follicles, medullary cords/sinuses visible)
Slide 2 (vivid pink/purple - gastric rugae pattern):
  • Tall columnar surface epithelium with deep gastric pits
  • Dense lamina propria with glands below
  • Identification: Stomach (Fundus/Body)
  • Two identifying features: (1) Gastric pits lined by columnar epithelium; (2) Gastric glands (fundic glands) in the lamina propria
Slide 3 (purple - lymphoid tissue with goblet cells in center):
  • Lymphoid follicles on both sides (cortex)
  • Central column of large goblet cells / mucinous glands
  • Identification: Appendix (or large intestine junction with lymphoid aggregates)
  • Two identifying features: (1) Numerous lymphoid follicles in the wall; (2) Goblet cell-rich columnar epithelium lining the lumen

Note: For the histology spots, the image quality through the eyepiece makes exact identification challenging. The stomach slide is the most confidently identified based on the classic gastric pit and gland pattern. The lymphoid-rich slide with goblet cells strongly suggests appendix.
