The main treatment depends on the extent and site of vitiligo:
Small, localized patches: prescription topical corticosteroid is commonly first-line.
Face, neck, skin folds, or children:topical calcineurin inhibitors such as tacrolimus or pimecrolimus are often preferred because they do not cause skin thinning.
More widespread vitiligo:narrowband UVB phototherapy is the main effective treatment.
Non-segmental vitiligo in people aged 12 years and above:ruxolitinib 1.5% cream may help repigmentation, particularly for limited body surface area.
Treatment is slow and often needs months. Sun protection and camouflage cosmetics can also help. A dermatologist should choose treatment based on the type, location, activity, and extent of vitiligo. AAD treatment overview supports topical therapies and phototherapy as standard options.
