"apex beat" AND physical examination

Usually, yes in bedside usage: both describe a forceful, brisk, non-sustained apex impulse, often due to increased stroke volume or volume overload.
However, terminology is not perfectly standardized:
  • Hyperdynamic apex beat is the more commonly used term for the apex impulse.
  • Hyperkinetic is more often used for a pulse such as a bounding or collapsing pulse, though some clinicians use it for the apex beat too.
  • Do not confuse either with a heaving apex beat, which is forceful but sustained and suggests pressure overload/LV hypertrophy.
A cardiology physical-examination reference defines a hyperdynamic apex as forceful, diffuse, and ill-sustained.
