Types of Hymen

The image is an anatomical diagram illustrating 9 morphological variants of the hymen, divided into two rows.

Row 1

#TypeAlt NameKey Feature
1AnnularRing-shapedCentral circular opening; hymenal tissue forms a complete ring
2CrescenticSemilunarCrescent/half-moon shaped opening; tissue absent anteriorly
3SeptateDividedOpening divided by one or more bands of tissue (septa)
4CribriformSievelikeMultiple small perforations scattered across the membrane
5ImperforateClosedNo opening at all; membrane completely covers the vaginal orifice

Row 2

#TypeAlt NameKey Feature
6FimbriatedFringedCircular opening with fringed/irregular margins
7DenticulateToothedCircular opening with toothed/serrated margins
8LabiateLippedElongated opening with thickened lip-like edges
9MicroperforatePin pointVery tiny, pinhole-sized central opening

Clinical Notes

  • Imperforate hymen (type 5) is the most clinically significant - it can cause hematocolpos (accumulation of menstrual blood) at menarche and requires surgical correction (hymenotomy).
  • Cribriform and microperforate variants may also cause outflow obstruction and similar symptoms.
  • Septate hymen may interfere with tampon use or intercourse and is treated with simple excision.
  • Most other variants (annular, crescentic, fimbriated, etc.) are considered normal anatomical variants with no clinical significance.

A clean, detailed anatomical educational diagram titled "TYPES OF HYMEN" showing 9 labeled illustrations arranged in two rows. Each illustration shows a schematic vulvar outline with the hymenal variant clearly drawn inside. Row 1 (5 types): 1. ANNULAR (Ring-shaped) - central circular opening, ring of tissue all around 2. CRESCENTIC (Semilunar) - crescent/half-moon shaped opening, tissue missing anteriorly 3. SEPTATE (Divided) - opening divided by one or two vertical septa/bands 4. CRIBRIFORM (Sievelike) - multiple small scattered perforations across membrane 5. IMPERFORATE (Closed) - completely solid membrane, no opening, shaded Row 2 (4 types): 6. FIMBRIATED (Fringed) - circular opening with fringed/irregular jagged margins 7. DENTICULATE (Toothed) - circular opening with toothed/serrated edges 8. LABIATE (Lipped) - elongated vertical slit with thickened lip-like edges 9. MICROPERFORATE (Pin point) - nearly complete membrane with single tiny pinhole Each diagram has its number, name, alternate name in parentheses, and a short description below (e.g. "Central circular opening", "Semilunar opening", "Opening divided by one or more septa", "Multiple small perforations", "No opening", "Fringed or irregular margins", "Toothed margins", "Thickened lips of hymen", "Very small pin hole opening"). White background, black ink line art style, medical textbook quality.
