I now have everything from Park's textbook (2020 NIS). Let me compile this into a clean, memorable answer with tricks.

National Immunization Schedule (NIS) - Sites & Memory Tricks

Memory Tricks

TRICK 1 - "BOLT" for routes

BCG = iD (intradermal) OPV + Rota = Oral Left thigh for IM shots in infants (Penta, PCV, Hep B, DPT booster-1) Td / DPT (older) = Upper arm IM

TRICK 2 - "Left vs Right Arm" trick

Left arm = vaccines starting early or with "BCG feel"
  • BCG - Left upper arm (intradermal)
  • JE - Left upper arm (subcutaneous)
Right arm = Inactivated/killed injected vaccines given mid-schedule
  • fIPV - Right upper arm (intradermal)
  • MR - Right upper arm (subcutaneous)
Mnemonic: "BCG & JE go LEFT (B-J-L), MR & IPV go RIGHT (M-I-R)"

TRICK 3 - "THIGH = TINY BABY" rule

All IM injections in infants (< 2 years) go in the antero-lateral mid-thigh (safest IM site in babies due to large muscle mass there):
  • Hep B (birth)
  • Pentavalent (6, 10, 14 weeks)
  • PCV (6, 14 weeks + booster)
  • DPT Booster-1 (16-24 months)
Mnemonic: "Tiny babies get thigh shots - HPPD (Hep B, Penta, PCV, DPT booster-1)"

TRICK 4 - "ORAL = Pour it down"

OPV (2 drops) and Rotavirus (3 drops) are both oral - no injection needed.
Remember: "PouR - Polio (2 drops) and Rota (3 drops)"

TRICK 5 - ROUTE Summary Table

RouteVaccines
OralOPV, Rotavirus
Intradermal (ID)BCG (Left arm), fIPV (Right arm)
Subcutaneous (SC)MR (Right arm), JE (Left arm)
Intramuscular (IM)Everything else: Hep B, Penta, PCV, DPT, Td - all in thigh (infants) or upper arm (older)

Quick Revision Rhyme

"BCG goes LEFT ID, IPV goes RIGHT ID, MR Right SC, JE Left SC, Babies get thighs for their IM shots, OPV and Rota - just drops in the mouth!"

This covers the complete NIS as per Park's Preventive Medicine (2020) and the NHM official schedule. The key principle to anchor everything: only 2 routes in the arm (ID = BCG left, fIPV right; SC = MR right, JE left), and all IM in infants go to the thigh.
