FDA caffeine 400 mg daily healthy adults energy drinks exercise

Caffeine can work well as a simple pre-workout, particularly for endurance, repeated high-intensity efforts, alertness, and perceived effort.
  • Effective dose: Start with 1-3 mg/kg about 45-60 minutes before training. For a 70 kg person, that is roughly 70-210 mg.
  • Higher dose: 3-6 mg/kg has the most consistent performance evidence, but adverse effects rise with dose. The medical text notes strongest aerobic-exercise effects at 3-6 mg/kg taken about 60 minutes beforehand, while 9 mg/kg adds side effects without added benefit.   • Practical option: A coffee, espresso, caffeine tablet, or clearly labeled caffeinated drink can work. Use the label, not guesses, because coffee and energy-drink caffeine contents vary.
  • Do not stack stimulants: Avoid combining it with other high-caffeine pre-workouts, energy drinks, nicotine, decongestants, or alcohol.
  • Daily ceiling: For most healthy adults, keep total caffeine from all sources at or below about 400 mg/day. Individual sensitivity can be much lower.
  • Avoid late use: Caffeine can impair sleep even when you do not feel stimulated. Avoid it within roughly 8-10 hours of bedtime if sleep is affected.
  • Stop or reduce it if you get palpitations, chest discomfort, marked anxiety, tremor, nausea, severe headache, or persistent insomnia.
Be more cautious or get individualized medical advice if you have high blood pressure, an arrhythmia, panic/anxiety symptoms, reflux, are pregnant, take stimulant medication, or are under 18.
