Avoid smoking/vaping, very spicy foods, and repeated throat clearing.
Do not start antibiotics on your own. Most sore throats are viral and antibiotics usually do not help, as
NHS guidance explains.
Get urgent medical care if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing saliva, drooling, severe one-sided throat pain/swelling, a muffled voice, neck swelling, rash, severe dehydration, or high fever. See a clinician if it lasts over a week, keeps recurring, or you have white patches on tonsils plus fever.
