National Deworming Programme (NDD) in India - PSM
Background
Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) - roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), and hookworms - are transmitted through soil contaminated with fecal matter. In children, STH infection causes:
- Anaemia
- Malnutrition
- Impaired physical, mental, and cognitive development
- Reduced school attendance and performance
India has one of the highest burdens of STH globally, making this a national public health priority.

Children who are sick or on medication on NDD/MUD should NOT be given the drug. They should take it after recovery or after consulting a doctor.
