National Deworming Programme (NDD) in India - PSM

Background

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) - roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), and hookworms - are transmitted through soil contaminated with fecal matter. In children, STH infection causes:
  • Anaemia
  • Malnutrition
  • Impaired physical, mental, and cognitive development
  • Reduced school attendance and performance
India has one of the highest burdens of STH globally, making this a national public health priority.
