The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) divides each side of the neck into two main triangles:
- Anterior triangle
- Posterior triangle
1. Anterior triangle
Boundaries
- Medial: midline of the neck
- Superior: inferior border of mandible
- Lateral: anterior border of SCM
It is subdivided by the digastric muscle and superior belly of omohyoid into four triangles:

| Submental triangle | Right and left anterior bellies of digastric laterally, body of hyoid inferiorly. It is unpaired and lies in the midline. |
| Submandibular (digastric) triangle | Inferior border of mandible superiorly, anterior and posterior bellies of digastric inferiorly. |
| Carotid triangle | Posterior belly of digastric superiorly, superior belly of omohyoid inferoanteriorly, anterior border of SCM posterolaterally. |
| Muscular triangle | Midline medially, superior belly of omohyoid superolaterally, anterior border of SCM inferolaterally. |
2. Posterior triangle
Boundaries
- Anterior: posterior border of SCM
- Posterior: anterior border of trapezius
- Inferior: middle third of clavicle
The inferior belly of the omohyoid divides it into:

| Occipital triangle | Larger, upper part of posterior triangle |
| Omoclavicular triangle | Smaller, lower part; also called the supraclavicular or subclavian triangle |
