I have contacts saved in .vcf file and I want to import that file into my Google account contacts and on the phone itself. I have an Android phone, so what should I do?

import VCF contacts file Google account Android 2024

Here are the two main ways to import your .vcf file — one for your Google account (syncs everywhere) and one directly on your Android phone.

Method 1: Import to Google Contacts via Browser (Recommended)

This imports contacts into your Google account, so they sync to your phone and any other device automatically.
  1. On a computer, go to contacts.google.com and sign in.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Import.
  3. Click Select file and choose your .vcf file.
  4. Click Import.
Your contacts will appear in Google Contacts and automatically sync to your Android phone (as long as your Google account is set to sync contacts on the phone).
Note: Google limits imports to 3,000 contacts at a time. If your file is larger, split it first.

Method 2: Import Directly on Your Android Phone

Use this if the .vcf file is already on your phone (or you transfer it there via USB, email, or Google Drive).
  1. Open the Google Contacts app on your phone.
  2. Tap the three-line menu (☰) or look for Fix & Manage at the bottom.
  3. Tap Import from file.
  4. Select your Google account as the destination (so the contacts sync to your account too).
  5. Browse to your .vcf file and select it.
The contacts are imported and saved to your chosen account.

Tips

  • Transfer the .vcf to your phone: The easiest ways are to email it to yourself, upload it to Google Drive and open it there, or copy it via USB.
  • Choose your Google account as the destination (not "Phone" or "SIM") — that way contacts are backed up and sync across devices.
  • After importing, go to Settings → Accounts → Google → Account sync and make sure Contacts sync is toggled on.
Both methods achieve the same result — Method 1 (web browser) is slightly easier if you're at a computer, while Method 2 is more direct if the file is already on your phone.
