  • Dryopithecus: An extinct Miocene ape that lived about 12 to 9 million years ago, mainly in Europe. It had ape-like features, including long arms suited for climbing. It is important in studying early ape evolution, but it is not considered a direct human ancestor.
  • Ramapithecus: Fossils once thought to represent an early human ancestor, dating to about 12 to 8 million years ago in South Asia. Later discoveries showed that Ramapithecus was probably the female form or a close relative of Sivapithecus, an ancient ape related more closely to the orangutan line than to humans. Therefore, it is no longer regarded as a direct ancestor of humans.
  • Homo habilis: Meaning “handy man,” Homo habilis lived in Africa about 2.4 to 1.4 million years ago. It had a larger brain than australopithecines, a less protruding face, and is associated with some of the earliest simple stone tools, called Oldowan tools. It represents an early member of the genus Homo.
  • Homo erectus: Meaning “upright man,” Homo erectus appeared about 1.9 million years ago and survived in some regions until roughly 110,000 years ago. It had a larger brain and more human-like body proportions than H. habilis, with long legs adapted for walking and running. It was among the first hominins to spread from Africa into Asia and Europe and is associated with more advanced Acheulean hand-axe tools. Evidence also suggests that later populations may have used fire.
The Smithsonian’s human-origins species resource provides further fossil-based information on Homo habilis and Homo erectus.

NCERT Class 12 Biology evolution Dryopithecus Ramapithecus Homo habilis Homo erectus text

According to NCERT Class 12 Biology, Chapter: Evolution:
  • Dryopithecus lived about 15 million years ago. It was more ape-like and had a hairy body. It walked like present-day gorillas and chimpanzees.
  • Ramapithecus also lived about 15 million years ago. It was considered more man-like than Dryopithecus. Like Dryopithecus, it had a hairy body and walked similarly to modern apes.
  • Homo habilis was the first human-like hominid. Its brain capacity was about 650-800 cc. It probably did not eat meat.
  • Homo erectus appeared about 1.5 million years ago. It had a brain capacity of about 900 cc and ate meat.
These points follow the NCERT Evolution chapter.
