Yes. IV sodium bicarbonate can generally be administered through a triple-lumen central venous catheter (TLC) by trained clinical staff.
Key precautions:
  • Use a dedicated lumen if possible.
  • Do not mix or co-infuse it with other medicines in the same lumen unless compatibility is confirmed. Sodium bicarbonate is alkaline and can cause precipitation or inactivate some drugs.
  • Check local protocol for whether it is given as a slow infusion or IV push, and flush the line before and after administration.
  • Monitor electrolytes, acid-base status, sodium load, and fluid status as indicated.
Do not give household “soda bicarb” orally or inject it into a line. Use only the prescribed sterile IV preparation.
