There are a few common reasons why you can't send images in X (Twitter) DMs, and fixes for each:

Why You Can't Send Images in X DMs

1. The person has restricted DMs The most common reason. If the recipient has their DM settings locked down, you may be able to send text but not media (images/GIFs). This is especially common if they don't follow you back.
2. You're not mutuals (they don't follow you) X limits what you can send to non-followers. To send images/media freely, the other person generally needs to follow you, or have open DM settings.
3. Account tier / subscription restriction X has tightened features for free accounts. Some media-sending features in DMs are restricted to X Premium (paid) subscribers, especially when messaging people who don't follow you.
4. Bug with the new desktop chat UI There's a known bug on X's desktop where the "Attach Image" button flickers and makes it nearly impossible to attach images in DMs. This is a platform-side issue.
5. Your own account settings If your account is new, has low trust, or is flagged in any way, media sending in DMs can be silently blocked.

What You Can Do

  1. Check if they follow you back - if not, ask them to. Once they follow you, media sending usually opens up.
  2. Ask them to open their DMs - they can go to: Settings > Privacy and Safety > Direct Messages > set "Allow message requests from" to Everyone, and also enable Allow media in messages.
  3. Try the mobile app instead of desktop - the desktop has a known image-attach bug right now. The mobile app (iOS/Android) tends to work more reliably.
  4. Clear cache / refresh - log out, clear your browser cache or app cache, and log back in.
  5. Upload to X as a post first (workaround) - if you urgently need to share an image, post it publicly (or as a limited audience tweet) and share the link in the DM.
  6. Consider X Premium - if you regularly need to send media to people who don't follow you, an X Premium subscription unlocks more DM capabilities.
The most likely fix is that the other person needs to follow you or adjust their DM/media settings.
