While waiting for a dentist: gently rinse with warm salt water after meals, eat soft foods, and keep the area clean. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum.
A partly erupted wisdom tooth can get infected (pericoronitis), and painkillers only mask it. Arrange a dental assessment, especially if pain lasts over 2 days. Seek urgent dental care for fever, bad taste/pus, worsening swelling, difficulty opening the mouth, or pain not controlled by medicines.
Emergency care now if swelling makes breathing, swallowing, or speaking difficult. The
NHS toothache guidance gives the same warning signs.
