NHS diarrhoea and vomiting adults when to get medical help severe abdominal pain dehydration

Watery diarrhea 3 to 4 times a day can be a stomach infection, but right upper abdominal pain that worsens with breathing is not something to ignore. It can sometimes involve the gallbladder, liver area, lung lining, or abdominal inflammation.
Please get assessed in person today, especially if the right-sided pain is ongoing, localized, or worsening. Go to urgent care or an emergency department now if you have any of these:
  • Severe or rapidly worsening pain, a hard abdomen, or pain when you press/release the area
  • Fever, repeated vomiting, yellow eyes/skin, dark urine, or pale stools
  • Blood or black stool
  • Trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion
  • Dehydration: very little urine, dark urine, dizziness, dry mouth, or inability to keep fluids down
Until you are seen:
  • Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution.
  • Eat light foods only if you feel able. Avoid alcohol, fatty meals, spicy foods, and large amounts of dairy.
  • Avoid loperamide or other anti-diarrhea medicines if you have fever, blood in stool, or significant abdominal pain.
  • Paracetamol/acetaminophen can be used for pain if you normally can take it. Avoid ibuprofen/naproxen if you are dehydrated or have stomach pain.
Guidance on diarrhea emphasizes fluids and seeking urgent help for severe, localized abdominal pain or dehydration, as summarized by the NHS gastroenteritis advice and NHS symptom guidance.
