Antara injection is a 3-month contraceptive injection (DMPA). It commonly causes periods to become irregular or stop completely. A 3-month missed period can be normal with this injection.
Do not take period-starting tablets or hormones on your own.
What she should do:
- Do a home urine pregnancy test now, especially if her next Antara injection was delayed or she had unprotected sex after the due date.
- If negative but there was sex in the last 2-3 weeks, repeat the test in 7 days or see a gynecologist for a blood test.
- If the injection is overdue, visit the family-planning clinic/gynecologist for the next injection. Use condoms or avoid sex for 7 days after a late reinjection, unless the clinician confirms pregnancy has been ruled out. - See a doctor urgently if she has severe lower-abdominal pain, fainting/dizziness, shoulder pain, or heavy bleeding, even if the test is negative. These can need urgent assessment for pregnancy outside the uterus.
