Tegaderm is a brand of transparent adhesive film dressings, commonly used to:
- Cover and protect small superficial wounds or intact at-risk skin
- Secure IV catheters, central-line dressings, and other devices
- Act as a secondary dressing over another wound dressing
- Provide a moist environment that can support healing of suitable superficial wounds
It is usually waterproof and breathable, allowing the site to be seen without removing the dressing. Tegaderm is one example of a semipermeable film dressing. Pfenninger and Fowler's Procedures for Primary Care, Third lists Tegaderm among such dressings.
Do not use it to replace sutures or to close a deep/gaping wound. For an IV or catheter site, follow the product instructions and local infection-control protocol. The manufacturer's indications include catheter sites, minor wounds, device securement, and secondary wound coverage.
