3. Masanumasika Lakshana
(Month-by-Month Signs of Pregnancy)
These are the signs and symptoms observed in each month as the fetus develops.
| Month | Key Features (as per Charaka/Sushruta) |
|---|
| 1st Month | Embryo is like a jelly-like mass (Kalala). Pregnant woman begins to feel heaviness and drowsiness. |
| 2nd Month | Embryo becomes Ghana (solid mass) or Pinda (round mass). Woman develops more pronounced nausea. |
| 3rd Month | Limb buds appear. Woman may notice cravings (Dauhrida). Neglecting cravings can harm the fetus. |
| 4th Month | Fetus attains stability. Woman feels particular heaviness in the body (as per Charaka). Heart of fetus becomes functional. |
| 5th Month | Fetus gains consciousness (Chitta/Manas). Woman feels loss of flesh and blood (emaciation) due to fetal nourishment. |
| 6th Month | Fetus gains strength and complexion. Woman feels more fatigue. |
| 7th Month | Fetus attains overall maturity. Woman experiences Sarva Aakaraih Klantatama - excessive exhaustion by all means. Loss of flesh and blood accelerates. |
| 8th Month | Ojas is transferred between mother and fetus; this period is delicate. Both may appear pale/unstable. |
| 9th Month | Fetus descends (lightening). Woman experiences frequency of micturition and enlargement of abdomen. |
4. Modern Correlation of Garbha Lakshana
For BAMS exams, the correlation with modern obstetrics is also asked:
Presumptive Signs:
- Amenorrhoea, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, frequent micturition, breast changes, chloasma, linea nigra, striae, quickening
Probable Signs:
- Hegar's sign, Osiander's sign, Jacquemier's sign, Chadwick's sign, Palmer's sign, Goodell's sign, Braxton Hicks contractions, ballotment, pregnancy tests
Positive Signs:
- Fetal visualization on sonography, fetal heart sounds, fetal movements felt by examiner
5. Yugma Garbha Lakshana (Signs of Twin Pregnancy)
- When the abdomen is elevated on both sides and depressed in the centre (like a trough - Droni Bhutam Udaram), it indicates twin pregnancy.
