Yes. Glyphosate is an organophosphorus compound, more specifically an organophosphonate herbicide.
However, it is not a typical organophosphate insecticide such as parathion or malathion:
  • Glyphosate contains phosphorus, but has a C-P bond (phosphonate).
  • It does not cause poisoning by acetylcholinesterase inhibition.
  • Therefore, glyphosate exposure does not usually produce the classic organophosphate cholinergic toxidrome: salivation, lacrimation, miosis, bronchorrhea, bradycardia, or fasciculations.
It acts in plants by inhibiting EPSP synthase in the shikimate pathway.
