The incorrect statement is:
“Cabergoline is used only in hyperprolactinemia.”
Cabergoline is preferred for hyperprolactinemia/prolactinomas because it is more effective, longer acting, and usually better tolerated than bromocriptine. However, it can also be used at higher doses in selected patients with acromegaly, alone or with a somatostatin analogue, particularly when there is mixed GH and prolactin secretion.
The other key points are broadly correct:
  • Both cabergoline and bromocriptine are dopamine D2 agonists.
  • Cabergoline generally causes fewer adverse effects, especially nausea.
  • Cabergoline has a longer half-life, about 65 hours, versus about 7 hours for bromocriptine.
  • Cabergoline is usually less effective for acromegaly than somatostatin analogues. Goodman & Gilman’s The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, lines 1537-1541.
