Shivering is often the body’s way of generating heat, commonly from feeling cold or developing a fever.
Get urgent medical help now if shivering occurs with confusion, extreme drowsiness, slurred speech, trouble breathing, chest pain, blue/gray skin or lips, seizure, a temperature below 35°C/95°F, or after a transfusion or surgery. These can indicate serious hypothermia or another urgent problem. The
CDC lists hypothermia warning signs, including shivering, confusion, fumbling hands, and drowsiness.
If it is accompanied by fever, severe headache, stiff neck, rash, persistent vomiting, or you feel very unwell, seek same-day medical assessment.
