Paper Structure

Note: The NMC pattern effective from Batch 2022 (as per NMC Notice No. N-P050(20)/16/2024-PGMEB-NMC) uses 10 short-structured questions (10 marks each = 100 marks) per paper. Some older university syllabi used 2 Long Essays (20 marks each) + 6 Short Essays (10 marks each) = 100 marks - check your own university notification for confirmation.

As per the NMC 2024 pattern, the exam structure is: (Clinical/Practical 280 + Thesis 20 + Viva 100) = 400 - theory papers are the internal/university component, while the final exam is practical-dominant.

Exam Tips for Paper IV

1. Recent advances are specifically earmarked for Paper IV - prepare ECMO, POCUS, AI in EM, REBOA.
2. Pediatric emergencies are high-yield - PALS algorithms, neonatal resuscitation, pediatric sepsis criteria.
3. Obstetric emergencies - eclampsia (MgSO4 protocol), modified CPR in pregnancy, PPH management bundles.
4. Disaster/CBRN - memorize CBRN decontamination protocols, START triage criteria.
5. Ethics/Medico-legal - MLC procedures, brain death criteria, DNR ethics are commonly asked.
6. Short structured format means each answer should be focused, precise, and ideally with a brief table or algorithm.
