pregnancy diarrhea dehydration when to seek urgent medical care medicines safe official
At 8 months pregnant, do not start a loose-motion medicine without speaking to your obstetrician or maternity unit first.
Do now
Take ORS frequently in small sips. Use a standard packet mixed exactly as directed with safe drinking water.
Continue fluids, light foods such as rice, banana, toast, curd/yogurt if tolerated.
Avoid oily foods, outside food, and sugary drinks.
Medicine
Loperamide (Imodium) may be used in some pregnancies, and a maternal-fetal medicine text reports no increase in major adverse pregnancy outcomes, but you should get approval from your pregnancy doctor before taking it, especially this late in pregnancy. Creasy & Resnik’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine, p. 68.
Do not take Pepto-Bismol/bismuth subsalicylate, castor oil, antibiotics, or herbal remedies on your own in pregnancy. Castor oil can trigger uterine contractions.
Get urgent medical assessment today if you have:
Fever, blood or black stool, severe stomach pain
Repeated vomiting or cannot drink
Dark urine, very little urine, dizziness, fainting, or marked weakness
More than about 6 watery stools in 24 hours, or diarrhea lasting over 24 hours at this stage
Uterine tightening/contractions, fluid leaking, vaginal bleeding, or reduced baby movements
Because you are 8 months pregnant, call your obstetrician/maternity hospital now for medicine advice, particularly if the loose motions are frequent.
