Flavoxate 200 mg tablet prescribing information indication dosage warnings

Flavoxate 200 mg is a bladder-muscle relaxant used for relief of urinary symptoms such as:
  • Urgency and frequent urination
  • Painful urination
  • Night-time urination
  • Bladder spasms or urge incontinence
It may be used when symptoms occur with cystitis, prostatitis, or urethritis, but it is not an antibiotic and does not treat a urinary infection itself. MedlinePlus drug information
How it is usually taken: Follow the exact prescription. Common adult labeling uses 100-200 mg, 3-4 times daily, though available strengths and local prescribing differ. Do not self-adjust the dose. DailyMed prescribing information
Common side effects: dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, and sometimes palpitations.
Avoid or seek medical advice before using if you have glaucoma, stomach or intestinal blockage/ileus, urinary obstruction or retention, gastrointestinal bleeding, or are pregnant/breastfeeding. Do not drive if it makes you drowsy or blurs your vision.
The urology literature describes flavoxate as having mixed bladder effects, but notes limited modern trial evidence for documented efficacy. Campbell-Walsh Wein Urology, p. 695-698.

NHS frequent urination causes when to seek urgent care urinary frequency adults

For frequent urination, the right tablet depends on the cause:
  • Burning urine, fever, lower abdominal pain, cloudy urine: may be a UTI. You need a urine test and may need an antibiotic prescribed by a clinician. Flavoxate can reduce spasms/symptoms but will not cure an infection.
  • Urgency, going often, leakage, without burning or fever: may be overactive bladder. Flavoxate 200 mg may be prescribed for symptom relief, but it is not appropriate for everyone.
  • Men with weak stream, straining, incomplete emptying, or night-time frequency: prostate enlargement or urinary blockage needs assessment. Do not take bladder-relaxing tablets without medical advice.
  • Very thirsty, passing large volumes of urine, weight loss: get checked for diabetes.
Do not use flavoxate without clinician advice if you have glaucoma, urine retention/obstruction, intestinal blockage, or severe constipation. It can cause dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, and palpitations.
Seek urgent care today if there is fever, back/flank pain, vomiting, blood in urine, inability to pass urine, severe pain, or pregnancy.
