- The muscle belly converges on the quadriceps femoris tendon, which inserts on the base of the patella
- The patellar ligament (continuation of the quadriceps tendon below the patella) then runs to the tibial tuberosity
- So the functional insertion is the tibial tuberosity via the patella and patellar ligament
Action
- Hip joint: Flexion (unique to rectus femoris among the quadriceps - it is the only quad head that crosses the hip)
- Knee joint: Extension
