Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels, most commonly coronary arteries affected by atherosclerosis. A balloon-tipped catheter is inserted into the vessel and inflated to compress the plaque and widen the lumen. A small mesh tube called a stent is usually placed to keep the vessel open afterward.
