Plant taxonomy is the way scientists sort and name plants, a bit like organizing a huge library.
Imagine every plant has an address. The address starts very broad and becomes more specific:
- Kingdom - the biggest group
- Division - a large kind of plant group
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species - the most exact name
For plants, the biggest group is usually Kingdom Plantae, meaning all plants.

The closer two plants are in this system, the more things they have in common.

A common sunflower’s scientific name is Helianthus annuus.

- Division: Flowering plants
- Family: Aster family, called Asteraceae
- Genus: Helianthus
- Species: annuus
So Helianthus annuus is its special scientific name. Scientists around the world use this same name, even if they speak different languages.
The two-part scientific name
A plant’s scientific name has two words:
- Genus name first, with a capital letter: Helianthus
- Species name second, in lowercase: annuus
Both are normally written in italics: Helianthus annuus.
It is like saying:
“This plant belongs to the Helianthus family group, and it is the exact kind called annuus.”
Why do scientists do this?
Common names can get confusing. One plant may have many different names in different places. Also, two different plants may share one common name.
Taxonomy gives every plant one clear scientific name, and helps people understand:
- which plants are closely related
- which plants may have similar flowers, seeds, or leaves
- how plants have changed over a very long time
- how to protect rare plants
