Here is a complete breakdown of ZOLL defibrillator pad placement, directly from ZOLL's official guidance and aligned with AHA recommendations.

ZOLL Pad Positions - Adults

There are two accepted configurations:

1. Anterior-Lateral (most common)

Adult Anterior/Lateral Placement
PadLocation
Sternum (right)To the right of the sternum (patient's right), just below the clavicle, above the right nipple
Lateral (left/apex)Just below and to the left of the left nipple, along the anterior-axillary line (under the breast on females)

2. Anterior-Posterior (front-back)

Adult Anterior/Posterior Placement
PadLocation
Posterior (back)To the left of the spine, just below the scapula, at heart level
Anterior (front)Over the cardiac apex - between the midline of the chest and nipple (male), or under the breast (female)

Pediatric Pads

ZOLL pediatric electrodes are designed specifically for anterior-posterior positioning:
  • Back pad: Along the center of the spine
  • Front pad: Over the cardiac apex, between the midline and nipple
For very small children where the pads may overlap, use the A/P configuration only.

Key Tips

  • Follow the diagram printed on the pad packaging - each ZOLL electrode has a placement diagram on it
  • For ZOLL CPR Stat-Padz: Red = posterior ("red to the bed"), Purple = anterior
  • The purple pad is the positive lead - positioning it closest to the heart with minimal impedance optimizes defibrillation success and pacing capture
  • Avoid placing pads over implanted devices (pacemakers, ICDs) - move at least 1 inch away
  • Ensure skin is dry and free of excessive hair for good contact
Both anterior-lateral and anterior-posterior positions are considered acceptable by the AHA for adult defibrillation.
