Examination of Rhinoscopy and Laryngoscopy


RHINOSCOPY

Rhinoscopy is the examination of the nasal cavity. It is divided into anterior rhinoscopy and nasendoscopy (posterior/endoscopic rhinoscopy).

1. Anterior Rhinoscopy

Instrument: Thudicum's speculum + headlight illumination.
Procedure:

1. Indirect / Mirror Laryngoscopy

Preparation:
  • Check equipment and light source.
  • Examine both nares; choose the more patent one.

4. Direct (Rigid) Laryngoscopy (for Intubation/Airway)

Equipment: Macintosh blade (curved) or Miller blade (straight).
Technique:
  1. Position patient in the sniffing position (occiput elevated, neck flexed, head extended).
  2. Elevate bed so patient's head is at the level of the clinician's lower sternum.
  3. Hold laryngoscope in the left hand; open mouth with right hand.
