In India, choose a lab-based STI panel with home sample collection rather than relying only on an instant “STD kit.” Services such as Tata 1mg home lab tests can arrange collection in many cities. Prefer a NABL-accredited laboratory.
Ask for testing that includes:
- HIV 1/2 fourth-generation Ag/Ab
- Syphilis: RPR/VDRL with confirmatory TPHA/TPPA if reactive
- Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and consider hepatitis C if there was blood exposure
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea NAAT/PCR: urine sample for penis exposure, vaginal/cervical swab for vagina exposure, throat or rectal swab if those sites were exposed
- Consider a pregnancy test if relevant
Do not routinely buy herpes blood testing without a clinician's advice. If you have a sore, blister, discharge, burning urination, rash, or genital ulcer, get examined and ask for a direct swab/PCR from the lesion.
Timing matters
- Chlamydia/gonorrhea: test about 7 days after exposure. If negative but symptoms or concern continue, repeat at 2 weeks.
- HIV fourth-generation laboratory test: useful from about 2-6 weeks, with a repeat at 6 weeks and/or 3 months depending on exposure and clinician advice.
- Syphilis: test at 4-6 weeks, and repeat at 3 months if initial testing is early.
- A negative result immediately after sex does not rule out infection.
If the possible HIV exposure was in the past 72 hours, go to a hospital emergency department or an ART centre today to ask about HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Do not wait for a kit result. HIV self-tests can be useful for screening, but a positive result needs confirmatory laboratory testing, as described in CDC HIV testing guidance.
