TORCH infections trimester fetal risk pregnancy first trimester CDC

TORCH infections are most harmful when acquired in the first trimester, especially during organ formation. They can cause miscarriage, fetal death, or major congenital malformations.
Exception: for toxoplasmosis, fetal transmission is more likely in the third trimester, but disease in the fetus is usually most severe if maternal infection occurs in the first trimester.
