Cefpodoxime FDA prescribing information indications warnings
Cefpodoxime is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefpodoxime proxetil is a prodrug that is converted in the gut to active cefpodoxime.
Used for susceptible bacterial infections, such as some throat/tonsil, ear, sinus, chest, skin, and urinary infections. Its appropriate use depends on local resistance patterns and culture results where available. The FDA prescribing information lists approved infection-specific uses.
It does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or influenza.
Common adverse effects: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, headache, and rash.
Seek urgent help for facial/throat swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering rash, or severe/persistent watery or bloody diarrhea.
Avoid or use only with clinician advice if you have had a serious allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment.
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the prescribed course unless a clinician advises otherwise. Tablets are generally absorbed better when taken with food; follow your product label or prescriber’s directions.
If you share the infection being treated, age, formulation/strength, and prescription directions, I can help explain how it is usually taken and what to watch for.
