Types of Vehicles
Vehicles are broadly classified based on the medium in which they operate:
1. Land Vehicles
Vehicles that travel on the ground, either on roads, rails, or off-road terrain.
| Sub-type | Examples |
|---|
| Road vehicles | Car, motorcycle, bus, truck, bicycle |
| Rail vehicles | Train, tram, metro (subway), monorail |
| Off-road vehicles | Tractor, bulldozer, ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) |
2. Water Vehicles (Watercraft)
Vehicles designed to travel on or under water.
- Surface vessels: Ship, ferry, speedboat, sailboat, hovercraft
- Underwater vessels: Submarine, submersible
3. Air Vehicles (Aircraft)
Vehicles that travel through the air.
- Fixed-wing aircraft: Aeroplane, cargo jet
- Rotary-wing aircraft: Helicopter, drone (UAV)
- Lighter-than-air: Hot air balloon, blimp/airship
4. Space Vehicles (Spacecraft)
Vehicles that travel beyond Earth's atmosphere.
- Examples: Rocket, space shuttle, satellite, space station (ISS)
5. Amphibious Vehicles
Vehicles capable of operating on both land and water.
- Examples: Amphibious car (DUKW), hovercraft, amphibious ATV
Summary Table
| Type | Medium | Example |
|---|
| Land vehicle | Ground/road/rail | Car, train, bicycle |
| Watercraft | Water surface/underwater | Ship, submarine |
| Aircraft | Air | Aeroplane, helicopter |
| Spacecraft | Outer space | Rocket, space shuttle |
| Amphibious | Land + Water | Hovercraft, DUKW |
Key Point: Vehicles can also be classified by power source (petrol/diesel, electric, solar, human-powered) or by purpose (passenger, freight, military, emergency).
