Classification of epithelium

Epithelium is classified mainly by:
  1. Number of cell layers
  2. Shape of the surface cells
  3. Sometimes, apical specialization, such as cilia or keratin
Histology: A Text and Atlas with Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology, pp. 321-322.

1. Based on number of layers

TypeDefinition
Simple epitheliumA single layer of cells. All cells rest on the basement membrane.
Stratified epitheliumTwo or more layers of cells. It is named according to the shape of the most superficial cells.
Pseudostratified epitheliumAppears multilayered because nuclei lie at different levels, but every cell contacts the basement membrane. It is actually a simple epithelium.
Transitional epithelium (urothelium)A specialized stratified epithelium adapted for stretching in the urinary tract.

2. Based on shape of cells

Cell typeShape
SquamousFlat cells, width greater than height
CuboidalHeight, width, and depth are approximately equal
ColumnarHeight is greater than width

Types, sites, and functions

Type of epitheliumMain sitesMajor function
Simple squamousAlveoli of lungs, endothelium of blood vessels, mesothelium of serous cavities, Bowman capsuleRapid diffusion, filtration, smooth lining
Simple cuboidalKidney tubules, thyroid follicles, small ducts of glands, surface of ovarySecretion and absorption
Simple columnar, non-ciliatedStomach, intestine, gallbladderAbsorption and secretion
Simple columnar, ciliatedUterine tubes, small bronchiMovement of ovum or mucus
Pseudostratified ciliated columnarTrachea and most of upper respiratory tractMucociliary clearance
Pseudostratified columnar with stereociliaEpididymis, ductus deferensAbsorption and secretion
Stratified squamous, keratinizedEpidermis of skinProtection from abrasion, dehydration, and infection
Stratified squamous, non-keratinizedOral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, vagina, anal canalProtection against abrasion on moist surfaces
Stratified cuboidalDucts of sweat glands; larger ducts of some exocrine glandsProtection and limited secretion
Stratified columnarLarge ducts of glands, parts of male urethra, conjunctivaProtection and secretion
Transitional epithelium / urotheliumRenal calyces, renal pelvis, ureters, urinary bladder, proximal urethraDistension while maintaining a urine barrier

Key exam points

  • Stratified epithelia are named by the shape of their superficial cells, not the basal cells.
  • Pseudostratified epithelium is simple, because all cells touch the basement membrane.
  • Transitional epithelium is stratified and has dome-shaped superficial umbrella cells when relaxed.
  • Apical modifications may be included in the name:
    • Ciliated simple columnar epithelium
    • Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
A simple way to remember:
  • Simple = absorption, secretion, diffusion
  • Stratified = protection
  • Transitional = stretching
