Pedophile means

A pedophile is a person who experiences a persistent sexual attraction to prepubescent children (generally age 13 or younger). The term comes from Greek: paidos (child) + philos (loving/attracted to).
Key distinctions:
  • Pedophilia refers to the psychological condition - a paraphilia characterized by recurrent, intense sexual urges or fantasies involving children. It is listed in the DSM-5 as Pedophilic Disorder when the person acts on these urges or is distressed by them.
  • Having the attraction alone does not automatically make someone a criminal. Acting on it - through child sexual abuse, exploitation, or possession of child sexual abuse material - is a serious crime in virtually every jurisdiction.
Clinical notes:
  • It is distinct from hebephilia (attraction to pubescent/early adolescent individuals) and ephebophilia (attraction to mid-to-late adolescents).
  • Not all child sex offenders are pedophiles, and not all pedophiles commit offenses.
  • The cause is not fully understood but is thought to involve neurodevelopmental factors.
Legally, the term is sometimes used loosely in public discourse to refer to anyone who sexually abuses a child, regardless of clinical diagnosis.
In short: a pedophile is someone with a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children - a condition that, when acted upon, constitutes one of the most serious criminal offenses and harms.
