Submandibular Ganglion
Introduction
The submandibular ganglion is one of the four parasympathetic ganglia of the head (the others being the ciliary, pterygopalatine, and otic ganglia). It is a secretomotor (parasympathetic) ganglion that controls salivary secretion from the submandibular and sublingual glands.
Location
- Situated in the floor of the oral cavity, on the lateral surface of the hyoglossus muscle
- It characteristically "hangs off" the inferior surface of the lingual nerve by two small nerve roots - this is a classic anatomical description

Clinical Relevance
Lingual nerve injury has different effects depending on the level:
