1. Introduction
Stress is a common part of human life. Every person experiences some form of stress while studying, working, managing family responsibilities, facing financial problems, coping with illness, or adapting to major life changes. A certain amount of stress can help a person remain alert, active and motivated. However, when demands continue for a long period or exceed an individual’s ability to cope, stress may affect physical health, emotional balance, relationships, academic performance and work efficiency.
Stress management means understanding the causes and effects of stress and using healthy methods to prevent, reduce and cope with it. It does not mean removing every challenge from life. Rather, it means developing the capacity to respond to challenges in a calm, planned and constructive manner.
Stress is influenced not only by an event itself but also by how a person interprets that event. Two students may face the same examination: one may see it as an opportunity to perform well, while the other may see it as an unbearable threat. Thus, personal beliefs, past experiences, social support, coping skills and personality influence the stress response.

2. Definition and Concept of Stress
The word “stress” is often used to describe pressure, tension, worry or strain. Scientifically, stress refers to the body’s physical and psychological response to a demand, challenge or perceived threat.
Hans Selye, a pioneer in stress research, defined stress as “the nonspecific response of the body to any demand.” This definition explains that the body may show similar reactions, such as increased heart rate, muscle tension and hormonal changes, in response to different situations such as fear, injury, examinations, conflict or infection.

A stressor is anything that produces stress. A stressor may be external, such as noise, workload or conflict, or internal, such as negative thoughts, fear of failure or unrealistic expectations.
Stress is not always harmful. It can be useful when it encourages an individual to prepare for an examination, complete work before a deadline or respond quickly in an emergency. Problems arise when stress becomes excessive, prolonged or poorly managed.
Important features of stress include:
- It is a normal response to life demands.
- It affects the body, mind, emotions and behaviour.
- Different people respond differently to the same stressor.
- It may be short-term or long-term.
- It can be positive or negative.

3. Types of Stress
Stress can be classified in several ways.
3.1 Positive Stress or Eustress
Positive stress is called eustress. It motivates a person to perform better and achieve goals. It is usually short-term and manageable.

3.4 Chronic Stress

Chronic stress is more harmful because it can affect sleep, immunity, mental health and physical functioning.
4. Sources of Stress and Types of Stressors
Stressors may be internal or external.
4.1 Internal Stressors
Internal stressors arise from within the person. These are often related to thoughts, emotions, beliefs and expectations.

4.6 Psychological Sources of Stress
Psychological stressors include anxiety, grief, fear, anger, disappointment, low confidence, traumatic memories and uncertainty. These stressors are especially important because they influence the way a person appraises a situation.
5. Stress and Its Effect on Human Physiology and Behaviour
When a person perceives danger or pressure, the body activates its stress-response system. This prepares the person to deal with the challenge. The response is often called the fight-or-flight response.
The brain, especially the hypothalamus, activates the sympathetic nervous system. Stress hormones such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol are released. These hormones prepare the body for immediate action.
During a stress response, the following changes may occur:

6. Hans Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome
Hans Selye explained the body’s response to prolonged stress through the concept of the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). According to this model, the body passes through three stages when exposed to stress.
6.1 Stage One: Alarm Reaction
The alarm reaction occurs when the body first encounters a stressor. The body recognizes the threat and activates the fight-or-flight response.
During this stage:

The Holmes and Rahe Life Change Index is a scale used to estimate stress related to major life events. It assigns “life change units” to events that require adjustment.
Examples of life events include:

- Retirement

- Change in living conditions
- Change in school or work responsibilities

Problem-solving is a practical method for handling stressors that can be changed.
Steps in problem-solving are:

- Put the plan into action.
- Review the result and modify the plan if necessary.
For example, if a student is stressed because of incomplete coursework, the solution may involve preparing a timetable, dividing the work into daily tasks and asking the teacher for clarification.
10.5 Healthy Lifestyle and Self-Care
Self-care is essential for stress prevention. It includes:
- Getting adequate sleep
- Eating balanced meals
- Drinking enough water
- Exercising regularly
- Avoiding tobacco and excess alcohol
- Taking breaks from work or study
- Spending time in enjoyable activities
- Maintaining hygiene and routine
- Seeking social support
Regular physical activity is particularly useful because it helps reduce muscle tension, improves mood and supports sleep.
10.6 Conflict Management
Unresolved conflict is a major source of stress. Healthy conflict management includes:

Stress management requires self-awareness, discipline and regular practice. Individuals should identify their personal stressors and early warning signs. They should use healthy methods such as time management, positive thinking, problem-solving, exercise, adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, relaxation exercises and social support.
It is important to understand that managing stress is not a one-time activity. It is a continuous process of maintaining physical, emotional and social well-being. With proper coping skills and support, people can face life challenges with greater confidence, balance and resilience.
