Fibrosarcoma is the classic malignant mesenchymal tumor composed of spindle-shaped fibroblastic cells.
- Histology: spindle cells arranged in a characteristic herringbone pattern
- Typical presentation: slow-growing, painless, deep soft-tissue mass, often in the lower limb of adults
- Modern pathology: it is largely a diagnosis of exclusion, after ruling out other spindle-cell sarcomas such as leiomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and fibrosarcoma-like molecularly defined tumors.
