Mucomix (Acetylcysteine) - Nebulisation Dosage

Infants (1-11 months)

Key Administration Points

• Pre-treat with a bronchodilator (e.g., salbutamol/albuterol) 10-15 minutes before acetylcysteine nebulisation - this helps prevent bronchospasm
• The 10% solution can be used undiluted
• The 20% solution may be diluted with Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl) or Sterile Water for Injection if needed
• Caution in asthma - acetylcysteine can trigger bronchospasm; stop immediately if breathing worsens
• Discard any unused solution - the vial contains no preservative, so contamination risk is high once opened

Special Circumstances

• Nebulisation tent / Croupette: Requires much larger volumes (up to 300 mL per session) - dose must be individualised
• Direct intratracheal instillation: 1-2 mL of 10-20% solution, as often as every hour if needed

Indications for Nebulisation

• Chronic bronchopulmonary disease (COPD, chronic bronchitis)
• Acute bronchopulmonary disease
• Cystic fibrosis (pulmonary complications)
• Post-surgical pulmonary complications
• Atelectasis due to mucus obstruction
• Tracheostomy care

Note: "Mucomix" is a brand name used in some markets (e.g., India) for acetylcysteine inhalation solution. The dosing is identical to the reference standard Mucomyst. Always confirm the concentration on the vial label before use, as the 10% and 20% solutions require different volumes for the same drug dose.
