The Study Is Real

The post cites a legitimate, peer-reviewed paper:

The numbers quoted in the post - testosterone falling from 39.9 ± 7.1 to 10.6 ± 3.6 nmol/L after 20 weeks of dietary zinc restriction - are accurately reported from the abstract. The study is not misquoted.

What the Post Gets Right

  • The study did show a ~73-75% drop in serum testosterone in young men after 20 weeks of zinc restriction.
  • The baseline (39.9 nmol/L) and post-restriction (10.6 nmol/L) values are correctly cited.
  • The duration (20 weeks) is correct.
  • The study also showed the reverse: elderly men with marginal zinc deficiency who received zinc supplementation saw testosterone rise from 8.3 to 16.0 nmol/L over 3-6 months.

What the Post Leaves Out (Critical Context)

This is where the reel becomes misleading:
1. Tiny sample size - only 4 men. The zinc restriction arm of this study enrolled only 4 young men (mean age 27.5 years). This is far too small to draw strong population-level conclusions. The headline "75% crash" comes from n=4.
2. The zinc restriction was severe and deliberate. The study induced marginal zinc deficiency via strict dietary control over 20 weeks. This is not representative of a typical Western diet. Most people with ordinary eating habits - even without zinc supplementation - are not at risk of this level of depletion.
3. It doesn't mean zinc supplements boost testosterone in zinc-sufficient people. The study shows that correcting a severe deficiency restores testosterone to normal. It says nothing about taking zinc supplements when you already have adequate zinc status. Many people use this study to justify supplementation when their zinc is already fine - the evidence doesn't support that.
4. The study is from 1996 and was never replicated at this scale. It remains one of the most-cited papers on zinc and testosterone despite being a small, single-center, 30-year-old study. The effect size it showed has not been replicated in larger trials. A 2020 review in Andrologia found that zinc supplementation only meaningfully raises testosterone in men who are actually zinc-deficient.
5. Testosterone of 10.6 nmol/L is low-normal, not "crashed." While 10.6 nmol/L is a significant drop from 39.9 nmol/L, it still falls within or near the lower end of the normal male range (roughly 9-35 nmol/L). "Testosterone crashed" implies clinical hypogonadism, which is a stretch from these numbers.
