postpartum nutrition breastfeeding diet fruits official guidance

Two days after delivery, choose soft, easy-to-digest fruits that give fluids, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber:
  • Banana: gentle on the stomach and provides potassium.
  • Papaya: soft and fiber-rich. Eat ripe papaya.
  • Orange, sweet lime, or mandarin: vitamin C and hydration. Prefer whole fruit rather than juice.
  • Guava: high in vitamin C and fiber. Choose ripe guava and chew well.
  • Apple or pear: stewed/softened if you have stitches, constipation, or stomach sensitivity.
  • Berries, melon, or watermelon: hydrating options if they are fresh and well washed.
  • Prunes or soaked raisins: helpful if constipation is a problem, but begin with a small amount.
Have 1 fruit at a time, 2 to 3 servings daily, along with adequate water and balanced meals containing protein, grains, vegetables, and iron-rich foods. The NHS advises varied fruits and vegetables and plenty of fluids while breastfeeding, with fruit also helping postpartum constipation (NHS breastfeeding diet guidance).
Avoid or limit:
  • Unwashed, cut fruit that has sat out for a long time
  • Very large amounts of fruit juice, especially packaged juice
  • Any fruit that gives you reflux, diarrhea, or bloating
  • Grapefruit if you take medicines that interact with it
If you had a C-section, heavy bleeding, diabetes, high blood pressure, severe constipation, or are feeling weak/dizzy, tell your obstetrician or midwife, as you may need individualized dietary and iron advice.

With a C-section 2 days ago, keep fruit soft, clean, and easy to digest. Good choices:
  • Ripe banana: gentle, filling, potassium-rich.
  • Ripe papaya: soft and may help with constipation.
  • Stewed apple or pear: especially good if you feel bloated or have pain while passing stool.
  • Orange/sweet lime: good vitamin C for iron absorption and healing. Eat the whole fruit, not much juice.
  • Watermelon or muskmelon: hydration, if it is freshly cut and hygienically prepared.
  • Prunes or soaked raisins: useful for constipation. Start with 2 to 3 prunes or 1 tablespoon raisins.
Simple plan for today:
Breakfast: banana or stewed apple
Afternoon: orange/sweet lime
Evening: papaya or a small bowl of melon
Also have warm water, soups, protein foods such as eggs, dal, paneer, chicken/fish if you eat them, and iron-rich foods. Fiber plus adequate fluids helps prevent constipation, which is common after surgery and pain medicines. Berek & Novak's Gynecology advises fiber and, when prescribed, stool softener or an osmotic laxative after gynecologic surgery to prevent constipation. Berek & Novak's Gynecology, p. 3267.
Avoid large amounts of juice, unwashed fruit, and foods that make you gassy. Fruit does not harm the C-section stitches. If you have vomiting, a swollen painful abdomen, cannot pass gas, severe constipation, fever, worsening wound redness/discharge, or heavy bleeding, contact your maternity team promptly.
