Carpal Bones Name

The 8 carpal bones are arranged in two rows:
Proximal row (lateral to medial):
  1. Scaphoid
  2. Lunate
  3. Triquetrum
  4. Pisiform
Distal row (lateral to medial): 5. Trapezium 6. Trapezoid 7. Capitate 8. Hamate
Mnemonic: "Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle" (Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetrum, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, Hamate)
Quick notes:
  • The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone (fall on outstretched hand)
  • The pisiform is a sesamoid bone within the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon
  • The hamate has a hook-shaped process (hamulus) on its palmar surface
  • The capitate is the largest carpal bone
  • All 8 bones articulate to form the wrist joint complex and the carpal tunnel

Tarsal Bones Name

The 7 tarsal bones are arranged in proximal and distal groups:
Proximal group:
  1. Calcaneus (heel bone - largest tarsal)
  2. Talus (ankle bone - sits on calcaneus)
  3. Navicular (medial side)
Distal group: 4. Medial Cuneiform 5. Intermediate Cuneiform 6. Lateral Cuneiform 7. Cuboid (lateral side)

Mnemonic: "The Cunning Ninja Can Catch Many Lively Tigers" or the simpler: "Tall Californians Never Come To My Little Town" (Talus, Calcaneus, Navicular, Cuboid, Medial cuneiform, Intermediate cuneiform, Lateral cuneiform)

Quick notes:
  • Calcaneus - most commonly fractured tarsal bone (fall from height)
  • Talus - only tarsal bone with NO muscle attachments; has a high rate of avascular necrosis after fracture
  • Navicular - articulates with talus proximally; key bone of the medial longitudinal arch
  • Cuboid - on the lateral side; articulates with calcaneus
  • Three cuneiforms - articulate with metatarsals 1, 2, and 3 respectively
  • Cuboid - articulates with metatarsals 4 and 5
