The sequence of events:
  1. Trigger (sepsis, tissue injury, etc.) → release of tissue factor and proinflammatory cytokines
  2. Activation of the coagulation cascade → massive thrombin generation
  3. Fibrin deposition in small vessels → microthrombi → organ ischemia
  4. Consumption of platelets, fibrinogen, and factors V, VIII, XIII
  5. Activation of the fibrinolytic system → plasmin lyses fibrin → fibrin degradation products (FDPs) released
  6. FDPs impair platelet function and fibrin polymerization → bleeding tendency

Management
